4 people shot on a Blue Line train in the Chicago area

CHICAGO (CBS) — Four people were killed in a mass shooting on a CTA Blue Line train in Forest Park Monday morning.

Forest Park Deputy Police Chief Christopher Chin said all four victims were passengers on a Blue Line train entering the Forest Park terminus when they were shot shortly before 5:30 a.m.

Police said three victims were found dead at the scene. A fourth victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Chin said the ages and genders of the victims were not yet known as of 11:15 a.m.

Chin said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there was no threat to the community. Investigators believe there was only one shooter.

Police said it did not appear the gunman knew any of the victims, all of whom appeared to be homeless people traveling by train. Police also said it did not appear the shooting was part of a robbery and the attack was completely random.

“It's shocking, of course. You know, it's unusual here to have a mass shooting like this, especially so close to a location that we're investigating on a holiday. So people feeling unsafe is justified,” Chin said. “It's a horrible situation. It's definitely something you don't want to wake up to. It's a Monday morning on a holiday. Everyone should be enjoying their time off, time with their families. It's Labor Day, so it's horrible to actually have to be here to sort out a situation like this.”

CTA security and Forest Park police located the suspected shooter using surveillance video. The suspect was found on a CTA Pink Line train and taken into custody later Monday morning. A weapon was recovered.

“Surveillance video is critical to many of our investigations, especially this one,” Chin said.

Blue Line service between Forest Park and Austin has been temporarily suspended. Shuttle buses will be available and CTA trains will run between O'Hare and Austin.

“It is a terrible tragedy that four people died over Labor Day weekend,” said Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins.

CTA issued the following statement:

“Although this was an isolated incident, this heinous and outrageous act of violence should never have taken place, especially not on a public transport train.

“As soon as this incident was reported, CTA immediately committed resources to assist Forest Park Police with their investigation. This included reviewing all possible surveillance camera footage, which proved critical in assisting local law enforcement.

“We commend both the Forest Park Police Department for their thorough and cooperative efforts in providing information to partner agencies, as well as the Chicago Police Department, whose quick actions led to the arrest of a suspect in this matter.

“CTA will continue to cooperate with local law enforcement as part of this ongoing investigation.”

Chin asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Forest Park police at 708-366-2425 or [email protected].
