Soldier suffers fatal gunshot wound at Jammu military base, Army rules out terror attack – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Jammu, Sept 2 (PTI) – An Army personnel was fatally wounded in a gunfire attack at an army base in Jammu on Monday, a defence spokesman said, ruling out a terrorist attack after the firing triggered an alarm and a large-scale search operation in the area.

According to authorities, Naik Kuldeep Singh from Punjab was on guard duty when he was hit in the head by a bullet at the Sunjawan military station on the outskirts of Jammu and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Initial investigations by the Indian Army suggest that the incident in which a soldier was killed this morning was not a terrorist attack. The incident is being investigated,” a defense spokesman said.

According to sources, preliminary investigations indicated that the soldier committed suicide.

Earlier, at around 10:50 a.m., several shots were fired at the military base, seriously injuring a soldier, the spokesman said.

An operation has been launched and further details are being investigated, he said.

A special unit of the local police rushed to the scene along with other teams to join the army in a large-scale search operation as a terrorist attack was suspected.

However, during the search operation lasting several hours, nothing suspicious was found and all entrances and exits to the surrounding areas were closed.

Drones and sniffer dogs were also used in the extensive search of the area.

In February 2018, terrorists attacked the Sunjawan military camp, killing six soldiers, one civilian and three terrorists.

Speaking to reporters at the scene on Monday, Superintendent of Police (South) Ajay Sharma said two gunshots were heard at a post, injuring a soldier.

“Investigations are underway (to ascertain the cause of the shooting. Senior officials are at the spot,” he said. PTI TAS RT
