Election campaign for the governorship in Jakarta starts early – Politics

Candidates for the Jakarta gubernatorial election have started their campaign early, parading around the city over the weekend and presenting their election manifesto to the people, even though they have not yet received approval to run from the General Election Commission (KPU).

The election in Jakarta is shaping up to be a three-way race: Two candidates backed by political parties and an independent submitted their applications to the KPU last week for the post widely seen as a stepping stone to the presidency. The KPU will not announce the final names on the ballot until next month.

Among them is Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, who is running on the ticket of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with actor Rano Karno as his vice president.

The two were seen walking on the streets and having breakfast with the crowds during the popular car-free day around the Bundaran HI roundabout in Central Jakarta on Sunday morning.

“We are not talking about politics or election campaigns, we are just asking for the blessings of the people of Jakarta and introducing ourselves to them,” Pramono said, according to a news clipping.

He said they also received complaints and requests from people they met on Sunday, such as the desire of Jakarta residents to extend the MRT rapid transit network to South Tangerang in Banten on the outskirts of Jakarta.

MRT Jakarta and the Ministry of Transport have reviewed the idea, but it is on hold due to possible funding constraints.
