Five Zimbabweans killed in bus crash in Limpopo, South Africans raise concerns over RAF scandal

A second fatal bus accident in the Limpopo region of South Africa raises the question of whether there is more to it than initially meets the eye.

Five people were killed when a bus overturned on the N1 outside Mokopane. It was the second serious accident in the province within a week.

The bus was traveling from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe when the fatal accident occurred.

Transport MEC saddened by second accident

In her speech on the incident, Violet Mathye, Member of Parliament for Transport and Public Safety, expressed her regret and called on public transport operators to ensure that their drivers do not embark on cross-border journeys when they are overtired.

Mathye's comments come five days after she expressed her condolences to the families of 10 people killed in another accident in the area.

Ten foreign nationals died when a bus en route from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg overturned. The bus lost control and overturned at a roundabout near Makhado, Limpopo.

South Africans complain about recent accidents

Despite the tragedy of the incidents, some social media users showed little remorse and wondered if the whole thing was part of a larger hoax.

This is not the first time that citizens have been outraged that foreigners are receiving payments from the fund.

Internet users questioned whether claims would be made to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) despite being foreign nationals.

Noma_here said:

“I'm sorry, but I'm beginning to believe that this is a new type of scam between government officials and cross-country airlines to defraud the RAF. I wouldn't be surprised if some RAF officials were involved in the scam as well.”

@_amBYRON also asked if there will be claims:

“The survivors are being picked up by the RAF, right?”

@MaggyValen was convinced it was a scam and said:

“Nope. There's no discernible pattern. This is a scam for the RAF. I'm telling you that.”

@SelbyNhleko also asked why Zimbabweans were involved in both accidents:

“The Zimbabweans are now cheating the South African RAF. And why do they keep tipping over buses?”

@MoloiThabisoo was of the opinion that foreigners should not be paid out:

“The RAF chief was absolutely right about the demands for foreigners. We must give up this nonsense of paying tax money to foreigners.”

Short messages Another accident involving a bus was also reported over the weekend in the Limpopo region.

In the incident, a police vehicle and a bus collided head-on near the village of Tshitomboni.

No deaths were reported, but one case of reckless or negligent driving was investigated.
