Former Premier League defender and Adanaspor coach Sol Bamba has died at the age of just 39.

Munich – A tragic event has shaken the football world: Souleymane “Sol” Bamba, former Premier League defender and coach of the Turkish second division club Adanaspor, has died at the age of just 39. As his club announced, Bamba fell ill before the match against Manisa FK and was subsequently taken to hospital, where he later lost his fight for life.

Former national player dies at 39

Bamba, born in France and playing internationally for the Ivory Coast, had a long professional career, including playing for Cardiff City in the Premier League, where he scored four goals in 28 games in the 2018/19 season. He began his football career at Paris Saint-Germain before making a name for himself in Scotland, at Leicester City and later as captain of Leeds United. He was a regular member of the Ivorian national team between 2008 and 2014 and took part in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

In 2021, Bamba was diagnosed with cancer. After successful chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free and returned to Middlesbrough FC until 2022 before starting his coaching career at Adanaspor. This news makes his sudden death all the more devastating.

His former clubs, including Leeds United and Cardiff City, have expressed their grief and condolences. “It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of club legend Sol Bamba. As a player and coach, Sol had an immeasurable impact on our football club. He was a hero to us all, a leader in every dressing room and a true gentleman. “Our thoughts are with his friends, family and everyone who was lucky enough to know and love Sol,” Cardiff City FC wrote on X (formerly Twitter)

Deep sympathy for the death of former international player Bamba

“Everyone at Leeds was devastated to learn of the passing of former Leeds captain Sol Bamba.” “Rest in peace Sol, you will be in our hearts forever,” said a statement from Leeds United.

The exact cause of death has not yet been announced. Bamba's death leaves a void in the football world, and condolences extend far beyond the borders of his former clubs. His dedication on and off the pitch and his courageous battle against cancer will be remembered.

In addition to Bamba, there is also the recently deceased Uruguayan football player Juan Izquierdo. He collapsed during a match without any impact. He then died in hospital. (smr)
