Transport MEC unveils measures to combat fatal accidents in KZN

21 people were killed in the accidents on Saturday.

Six female members of the Umkhonto weSizwe group died when their minibus was involved in an accident near Kranskop and the vehicle caught fire.

The group was on its way to an event at former President Jacob Zuma’s home in Nkandla.

Twelve people were killed in the second accident, a head-on collision on the R622 near Greytown.

Three people, including a child, were killed in a collision between two cars on the R74 in KwaDukuza.

At a press conference in Mayville on Monday, Duma said all three cases were being investigated as intentional killings.

“We have involved the National Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the agency’s road traffic inspectorate and the South African Police Service.

The main focus is to determine whether negligence occurred or was the root cause of the accidents mentioned above. We do this to prevent recurrence and, if necessary, to ensure criminal prosecution.

“This is part of ensuring and demonstrating zero tolerance.”

“The road accidents in Ntunjambili and Greytown are receiving our special attention as the number of casualties is huge and one car caught fire. I have insisted that a forensic investigation be carried out. This will also help identify the victims.”

The MEC announced several interventions, including the deployment of teams of highly experienced officers who will visit all families.

“We will speak to families to ensure that those who died receive a dignified burial. In coordination with the Road Accident Fund, we will visit individual families to explain a support package from the Department for Transport.

“In cooperation with the social welfare office, we have decided to assign social workers to the affected families who will provide ongoing psychosocial services during this time of grief.
