Funeral details announced for young Cork mother and ‘fabulous nurse’ who tragically died in Australia

Details of the funeral of a young mother from Cork who died suddenly in Australia a month after giving birth to her daughter have been announced.

Aileen Wilkinson, 32, died suddenly following a “tragic event” a month after the birth of her baby daughter Rosa.

The Cork native worked as a nurse at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

She died suddenly on August 21, leaving behind her partner Marco and her young daughter.

Her funeral will take place at O'Farrell's Funeral Home, Riverside Way, Midleton, on Monday 2nd September from 5pm to 7pm.

Reception at the Church of The Most Holy Rosary, Midleton, on Tuesday 3rd August at 11am, Funeral Mass followed by cremation at The Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy.

Since the tragic news was announced, numerous condolences have been pouring in for the young woman, who was described as a “fabulous nurse” who always had a smile on her face.

My deepest condolences go out to all of Aileen's family on her sad passing. I worked with Aileen in the GA Neuro at the CUH, she was a great nurse and a really kind person, always with a smile on her face. May she rest in peace,” a former colleague paid tribute.

“My sincere condolences to Marco, baby Rosa, Mary, Eddie, Cristín and Eoghan on the untimely passing of Aileen. I am so grateful to have known Aileen, laughed with her, enjoyed walks with her, and shared many pieces of cake with her. She had the best sense of humor and I will always cherish our memories. Thinking of you all xx,” a friend paid tribute.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to bring Aileen back to Ireland and over $70,000 Australian dollars (over $100,000 Australian dollars) was raised.

“As you may know, we have suddenly lost the beautiful Aileen following an unexpected tragic event. Aileen leaves behind her wonderful partner Marco and her beautiful little girl Rosa, who she gave birth to on July 23, 2024,” organizer Kieran Joyce said on the fundraising page.

“At this difficult time we are setting up this Go Fund to cover all the associated costs that will be immediately incurred in bringing Aileen back to Ireland and preparing things for Rosa's future. Any contribution is greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small, it would mean the world to Marco and Rosa.

“Those who are unable to donate financially would greatly appreciate words of comfort and shared memories of Aileen so that we can tell Rosa how present Aileen was in all of our lives. Thank you.”
