Northwood is hot and ready to pounce on the G-MAC

MIDLAND, Mich. (WNEM) – College football has officially begun at many schools. This week, the Northwood Timberwolves will take the field for the first time this year, heading to their first game of the new season against Gannon.

Last season, Northwood got off to a difficult start, losing its first three games in a row and sitting 1-4 at the start of October.

The Timberwolves then managed to turn things around and win their last three games in a row, finishing 5-6 overall and 5th in the G-MAC.

Northwood is expected to finish 6th in the conference again this year, but as they enter their second season under head coach Dustin Beurer, the team is highly motivated to show what they can do.

Given the growth the team experienced during the offseason, Northwood believes the sky is the limit for what they can achieve this season if they put in the effort.

“In that first year, they often have to evaluate you as a coach, and you have to evaluate them a little bit,” said coach Beurer. “I think what's unique is the guys who have stuck it out, the guys who are still here. They put in a tremendous amount of work in the spring and winter months, which has pushed us to get off to a fast start in this fall camp.”

The players in particular feel the connection at the beginning of this year and want to usher in a new era of Northwood football.

“We want to get this program back to what it was in the early 2000s,” senior quarterback Jacob Barlage said. “We want to fight for things. We want to fight for everything we get and we want to go out and win some games.”
