New Jersey shooting: Patient grabs police officer's gun and opens fire at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital, sources report

CHERRY HILL, NJ — As ABC affiliate WPVI from Philadelphia learned, investigations are underway after shots were reportedly fired in the emergency room of Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital.

According to sources, a Hi-Nella, New Jersey police officer transported a patient to the Camden County hospital shortly after noon on Saturday.

According to sources, the patient got hold of a police officer's gun in the emergency room and started firing shots.

WPVI spoke to a man who said he was a hospital employee. He said he received text alerts and an email from the hospital.

“It just said that there was an all-clear because of a shooting spree. I didn't get a text message beforehand saying that there was a shooting spree,” the man said.

According to sources, no one was injured and the patient was subdued.

“I can't imagine how this could have happened. It's scary that someone can just grab a police officer's gun holster and shoot him so quickly,” the man said.

The employee we spoke to said that although he did not work on Saturday, he was worried about his colleagues who were in the hospital.

He also has safety concerns about future developments.

“Whether people realize it or not, the medical field is scary. We're there to take care of people, and we have to take care of ourselves at the same time,” the man said.

WPVI has contacted both the hospital and authorities but has not yet received a response.

If you have any information, please contact authorities while the investigation continues.
