The University of Washington student who was shot dead, Whitewater, was a champion in gymnastics

WHITEWATER – Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student and national gymnastics champion, was shot and killed late Friday night. A 23-year-old suspect is in custody.

Welsh, a native of Plainfield, Illinois, was a member of the Warhawk gymnastics team, the university said in a statement. Last year, Welsh won the individual national title in vault at the NCAA Division III championships. She studied management in the university's School of Business.

“We know the news of Kara's death is heartbreaking for our close-knit university community. It is a time when we are all called to support one another, process the death and mourn,” said Corey King, chancellor of UW-Whitewater.

The university is offering counseling to the gymnastics team and coaches, who were personally informed. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our own,” the team said on Facebook.

Staff plan to provide additional support and flexibility to students before classes begin Tuesday. King ordered the UW-Whitewater flag to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday. Details about the memorial services will be announced as soon as they are available, the university said.

The name of the 23-year-old suspect, who remains in Walworth County Jail, has not yet been released by police. Police said the shooting occurred at an off-campus residence.

Details of the shooting were not released, but police said it was an altercation between Welsh and the man, who knew each other.

Police have asked the Walworth County District Attorney's Office to consider charges of first-degree premeditated murder, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Whitewater Police at 262-473-0555, option 4. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through P3Tips.com.

The investigation is still ongoing, police added, and no further information will be released at this time.
