2 motorcyclists die in an accident on Saturday in northern Alta.

Two people were killed in a serious accident involving several motorcycles and a semi-trailer truck on Highway 2 on Saturday morning.

Just before noon, RCMP Faust received reports of the accident near Range Road 143 at High Prairie, near the Sucker Creek First Nation and the Driftpile Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, they encountered an off-duty RCMP officer who was on scene assisting the injured when emergency personnel arrived.

Several motorcyclists were injured and two were killed.

One was a 38-year-old man from the Driftpile First Nation, the other was a 33-year-old Edmonton resident.

At least six other drivers were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity.

The RCMP said initial investigations indicated the motorcyclists were traveling in a large group when an oncoming semi-trailer crossed the center line and struck the group.

At this time, the RCMP believes that impairment was not a contributing factor to the accident.

An RCMP spokesman said the motorcyclists appeared to be involved in a charity ride organized by the Redrum Motorcycle Club.

The club posted about the accident on Facebook on Sunday and called it “tragic.”

Sucker Creek First Nation is located 347 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
