Matthew Gaudreau's pregnant wife says he 'couldn't wait to become a father'

Matthew Gaudreauwho died in a tragic bicycle accident alongside his brother, an NHL star Johnny Gaudreauwas excited to become a father for the first time.

“The proudest father. Matty couldn't wait to become a father,” said Matthew's wife. Madeline Gaudreauwrote on Instagram on Saturday, August 31, sharing footage of their sex reveal. “He never missed a deadline.”

Madeline added, “I can't wait to keep you alive through our son. … The best 14 years of my life. I can't wait to see you again. I miss you so much.”

Madeline and Matthew announced via Instagram in June that she is pregnant with their first baby and that the due date is in December.

Two months after their announcement, Matthew died at age 29. He and his older brother Johnny were riding bicycles in New Jersey on Thursday, August 29, when they were struck and killed by a drunk driver. Johnny was 31.

After her death, Madeline remembered her husband on Instagram.

“I'm at a loss for words. I just miss you. I don't know my life without you. I've never experienced such pain,” she wrote on Instagram on Saturday. “I'm so happy you chose me as your wife.” [and] to love me. You are the best thing about me.”

She continued, “I know you are looking down in as much pain as I am looking up. I will keep going for you and our son. I love you so much, Matthew.”

In a second message, Madeline promised to help her sister-in-law “carry” Meredith Gaudreau through their shared “extreme grief.” (Meredith and Johnny, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, have a daughter Noa and a young son Johnny.)

“We will share this extreme grief and terrible bond forever,” Madeline wrote on Instagram early Sunday, September 1. “The boys, however, could not have chosen stronger women to be their wives and mothers of their children. We will carry each other through every season, just as the boys would for each other. They blessed us with children. Through them, we will have a part of them with us on earth forever.”

Meredith vowed to take care of Madeline and baby Tripp in her own tribute on Saturday.

The Gaudreau's friends are also helping out and have set up a GoFundMe campaign for Madeline to cover medical and funeral expenses. The campaign has already raised over $320,000.
