CARMEL, NY (TCN) — An anesthesiologist pleaded guilty last week to beating a woman unconscious with a chemical and sexually assaulting her, which the victim recorded on a hidden camera.

The Putnam County District Attorney’s Office announced in a statement on August 22 that Paul Giacopelli had pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of second-degree assault. He will serve four years in prison and be on probation for a maximum of 10 years upon release. Giacopelli will also have to register as a sex offender.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office On December 29, officers received information that the victim had been “administered an anesthetic without her knowledge and subsequently sexually assaulted.” Investigators discovered that Giacopelli was the chief anesthesiologist at Putnam County Hospital and had the ability to obtain various drugs. Officers arrested Giacopelli the next day on four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and four counts of second-degree assault.

CBS News reports The victim worked for Giacopelli's family as a child care worker. She reportedly told investigators that she passed out four times after waking up to find a rag with chemicals rubbed on her face. The victim became worried and hid a camera in a room to confirm her suspicions. She reportedly filmed the December 29 incident and shared it with investigators.

According to CBS News, Giacopelli admitted that he rubbed sevoflurane, a chemical anesthetic, on a rag and placed it on the victim's face to render her unconscious. He reportedly claimed to have a “chloroform fetish” and that he targeted the victim because she was a “deep sleeper.”

After his arrest, Giacopelli's medical license was revoked.

District Attorney Robert Tendy said in the statement: “The victim's cooperation with the investigation and the prosecution, as well as her courage and willingness to testify, led to the defendants' admission of guilt.”
