Ruling Left MP targets political secretary to chief minister and senior IPS officer in Kerala – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Malappuram/Kochi, Sept 1 (PTI) – Ruling LDF MP PV Anwar's scathing attack on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's political secretary P Sasi and senior IPS officer MR Ajith Kumar, a confidant of the chief minister, on Sunday put the state government in a difficult position.

Anwar, a businessman turned politician and two-time member of Parliament, accused Sasi and Ajith Kumar, deputy director general of police (law and order), of abusing the chief minister's trust and failing to discharge their duties honestly.

The Left MP's allegations against the key person in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) and the senior official triggered strong political reactions from the opposition parties, who demanded the immediate resignation of CM Vijayan.

The Congress leadership termed Anwar's allegations “extremely serious” and “alarming” and demanded a comprehensive probe into the alleged illegal activities in the CMO, while the BJP urged the CM to respond to the allegations made by the ruling front MP.

Addressing a press conference here, the Nilambur MP attacked some senior police officials, including Kumar and Pathanamthitta SP Sujith Das, alleging that many of them were involved in “anti-national and anti-social activities”.

“Sasi and Ajith Kumar are officials who have been entrusted with important tasks by the Prime Minister. The question here is whether they are honestly carrying out the tasks entrusted to them,” he said.

Anwar made serious allegations against Ajith Kumar, accusing the senior IPS officer of intercepting telephone conversations of ministers, political leaders and journalists.

He also claimed that the officer had close ties to gold smuggling gangs and was involved in several serious crimes.

The MP claimed that officials like Ajith Kumar and Sujith Das would surely end up behind bars for their illegal and criminal activities.

He expressed concern that Chief Minister Vijayan and his government could be held responsible for the actions of such officials.

Anwar said the prime minister was in charge of 29 departments and he had delegated their responsibility to officials.

There are numerous misconducts and the political secretary Sasi has failed to properly analyse them and inform the prime minister about them, said the MP.

Anwar also claimed that his life was in danger but that he would continue to expose such illegal activities.

However, there was no immediate reaction from Sasi or Ajith Kumar to the MLA's allegations.

Speaking to reporters in Kochi, opposition leader VD Satheesan said the shocking allegations against the CMO were made by a ruling front MP who is a confidant of CM Vijayan.

The opposition's claim that the state's police force was controlled by a clique in the CMO had now been proven correct, he said.

“All these allegations were not made by the opposition but by a member of parliament whom the prime minister trusts. The prime minister has no right to remain in office even for a second,” Satheesan said.

All accused officials should be suspended with immediate effect and political secretary Sasi should also be dismissed, the LoP said.

“It is a serious allegation that the ADGP is even tapping the phones of ministers… The opposition is demanding that the CBI must investigate all this,” he added.

BJP state president K Surendran and long-time party leader V Muraleedharan also expressed a similar view, saying the allegations were directed against the chief minister and his office.

“The CM should reply to all these allegations. ADGP Ajith Kumar is the CM's confidant. MLA Anwar said he was tapping the phones of ministers. So Vijayan should clarify whether Ajith Kumar was tapping phones for him,” Surendran said in a statement.

The BJP leader further said that one could not imagine that his political secretary would take any action without the knowledge of the Prime Minister.

If a ruling MP says that the ADGP (law and order) has links with gold smugglers and underworld mafia gangs, it is now clear that the CMO is directing all criminal activities in the state, Surendran said. PTI LGK SS
