14-year-old dead, another teenager injured after shooting outside State Fair

NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) — Novi police say one teenager is dead and another injured after a shooting outside the Michigan State Fair in Novi Saturday night.

It happened just before 10 p.m. Saturday night when police responded to reports of shots fired in the area southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace in the parking lot near Grand River Avenue.

According to police, two 14-year-old boys were shot in the fair's parking lot.

Police currently have no suspect in custody, but believe it was a targeted shooting.

No details were released about the suspect.

Investigators told us Sunday morning that the two boys took an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then took another Uber to the county fair with some friends. They say the shooting may have stemmed from an argument between the teens that had been going on throughout the week.

Several people at the scene told 7 News Detroit they heard gunshots and ran.

“We are all trying to run away, to hide somewhere,” said a witness at the scene.

The fair takes place at the Suburban Collection Showplace.

According to police, there is currently no danger to the community.

State Fair organizers issued the following statement: Last night, an incident occurred outside the Michigan State Fair grounds where an altercation resulted in a shooting. The entire Michigan State Fair family mourns the loss of such a young life and all those affected.

The Michigan State Fair and its local law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of guests and attendees. Safety is a top priority and the State Fair has implemented enhanced security measures including weapons detection systems and increased on-site police presence.

After reviewing the incident by law enforcement officials, community leaders, and the Michigan State Fair Operations Team and Executive Committee, the Michigan State Fair will continue operations with even more police presence and important adjustments to closing times and policies. The Michigan State Fair will close the box office and entrance at 6:00 p.m. and the fairgrounds at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. For the remainder of the fair, visitors under the age of 18 will not be permitted to enter without a parent or guardian.
