Two people who were attacked on the sidelines of a large carnival festival in the London district of Notting Hill have succumbed to their injuries. According to the PA news agency, they are a 32-year-old mother who was at the carnival with her three-year-old daughter and other relatives, and a 41-year-old Swedish-born chef living in Dubai. According to police, they were critically injured in separate attacks during the long carnival weekend.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Platform X that such violence was “shocking, totally unacceptable and a betrayal of the values that Carnival was created to celebrate.” Carnival organizers also expressed their shock at the deaths in a statement.

The Notting Hill Carnival was founded by immigrants from the Caribbean, has been celebrated for more than 50 years and is considered one of the largest street festivals in Europe. A week ago, numerous acts of violence and arrests took place on the sidelines. According to police, 35 officers were injured and 230 people were arrested for various offenses within two days. In both the mother's case and the cook's case, one suspect was arrested. (sda/dpa/lyn)
