Fundraiser for Matthew Gaudreau's pregnant wife raises over 0,000

Following the tragic deaths of NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, the Gaudreau family received an outpouring of support.

A GoFundMe campaign was set up for Madeline Gaudreau, Matthew's wife, after it was announced that Madeline is expecting her first child in late December.

“During this unimaginably difficult time, we are coming together to support Matthew's wife Madeline and their growing baby Tripp and help alleviate some of the financial burdens they now face,” the campaign description reads.

The fundraising goal of $30,000 was exceeded, and by Saturday afternoon, more than 5,000 supporters had donated more than $365,000. The names of several NHL players were on the donation list.

Many donations included a variation of Johnny Gaudreau's No. 13 jersey, which he wore with both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames.

Donations will be used for Matthew's funeral expenses and for baby Tripp.

The Gaudreau brothers were killed while cycling in New Jersey on Thursday night, the eve of their sister's wedding, when 43-year-old Sean Higgins, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, struck them from behind.

The sports community mourned the passing of the Gaudreau brothers on Friday, and countless condolences poured in. While they were remembered for their talent on the ice, many who knew or met them spoke of their kindness.

Minutes of silence were observed at several sporting events.

Higgins was arrested and charged Thursday night after he admitted to drinking five to six beers and consuming alcohol while driving, according to police. A judge ordered him held in custody until his next court date on Thursday.

Higgins was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, as well as reckless driving, possession of an open container and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
