Some traffic signs have a black horizontal line. However, this has no decorative or separating purpose, but serves as an orientation aid.

Dortmund – Anyone who drives a car usually has a driving licence – even if some road users manage to drive for years or even decades without one. But a licence alone does not mean that the traffic rules are mastered like the back of their hand. On the contrary, the ADAC has found massive gaps in drivers' knowledge. This is also evident on TikTok, where videos by driving instructors are also very popular. For example, about the black horizontal line on the yellow or white signs at the side of the road.

Driving instructor reveals: Many people do not know the meaning of the line on the traffic sign

“Driving instructor Vitor” recently asked his followers on Tiktok what it meant. The video was viewed around 24,000 times, but there were only eight comments under the clip. The answer to the question has now gone viral and reached around 1.6 million users, reports 24auto.de.

But what does the black horizontal line on the so-called “pre-signposts” mean? The answer is relatively simple: it indicates that the exit is about to split. The destinations above the line can be reached via the left lane. “The lower one refers to the right exit,” explains the driving instructor at a Dortmund driving school (more news about cars and traffic at RUHR24).

The black horizontal line on the traffic signs is intended to help drivers to orient themselves better: “Then you know in advance where you have to line up!”

Meaning of black line on traffic sign: “Didn’t know!”

But for many TikTok users, this seems to be as new as the zip-up system in construction zones on the highway. At least many users are surprised in the comments.

Even a professional driver was not aware of the background of the black line on the traffic signs. Others are surprised that there are drivers who did not know this:

  • “Why don’t we learn something like that in driving school?”
  • “31 years of driving license, didn’t know!”
  • “Ok, I really learned something for the future, I didn’t know that.”
  • “Never noticed the black line before.”
  • “Thought it was just a hyphen.”
  • “It’s logical. You read from top to bottom and from left to right.”
  • “I’m extremely surprised that so many people don’t know this.”
