Terrorist threats continue to increase worldwide

Three years after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, the threat from terrorist groups such as ISIS is increasing again worldwide.

This year, IS has already claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks in Turkey, Iran and Russia. Actors close to IS also carried out a knife attack in Germany and threatened a Taylor Swift concert in Austria.

“The threat continuum is evolving daily, and our intelligence agencies are doing the best they can with the tools at their disposal,” said James DeMeo, an adjunct professor at Tulane University.

The renewed threat from ISIS and the emergence of other terrorist groups in the Middle East make it clear how difficult it is for the United States and its allies to fight these groups.

“The terror landscape is crowded and different groups are now vying for that power and to be the next group to target the next biggest country, which puts the United States at the center,” says Sara Harmouch, a doctoral student at American University.

In July, the US Central Command released a statement saying that ISIS was responsible for 153 attacks in Iraq and Syria in the first half of 2024 and was on track to more than double the total number of attacks they claimed responsibility for in 2023.
