Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's sister celebrated a bridal shower weeks before the crash

Weeks before Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau died in a bicycle accident on August 29, their sister Katie was hosting her bridal shower ahead of her wedding, where the brothers were to serve as best men.

On July 22, Katie posted photos from the celebration on Instagram and wrote: “Thank you to my mom, maid of honor, bridesmaids and mother-in-law for the bridal shower of my dreams. 💗🧡🤍.”

In the pictures, Katie poses with family and friends, surrounded by orange, white and pink balloons. She was supposed to marry her fiancé Devin Joyce on Friday, August 30, but called off the wedding after her brothers died the night before the ceremony, according to TMZ.

PEOPLE previously confirmed that the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey player, 31, and Matthew, 29, died in a bicycle accident on Thursday, August 29, in Oldmans Township near Salem County, New Jersey, following Katie's rehearsal dinner ahead of her wedding.

The brothers were riding their bikes on Country Route 551 North shortly after 8 p.m. when a driver believed to be under the influence of alcohol attempted to pass another car, fatally crashing Johnny and Matthew, New Jersey State Police told PEOPLE. The driver, Sean M. Higgins, was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and arrested. The investigation is ongoing.

Higgins made his first virtual appearance before a Salem District Court judge on Friday, accompanied by an attorney from a public defender's office.

“Upon further investigation, Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, charged with two counts of manslaughter, and was booked into the Salem County Correctional Facility,” the New Jersey State Police said in a statement. “This accident remains under investigation and no further information is available.”

Higgins' detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, September 5.

The Blue Jackets paid tribute to Johnny and Matthew in a statement shared on X on Friday. “We will miss him terribly and are doing all we can to support his family and each other during this tragedy,” the post said. “During this time, we ask for prayers for the Gaudreau family and that their privacy is respected as they grieve.”

Johnny's widow Meredith posted two tributes on Instagram for her late husband, the father of daughter Noa, who turns 2 in October, and son Johnny, 7 months old.

“Thank you for the best years of my life. Even though I lost you, I'm still the luckiest girl in the world because I was yours. I love you so much,” she wrote in one post. In the second Instagram post, she called him the “absolute best dad in the world.”
