Brooke Shields' daughter says she learned about her mother's sexual assault from her doctor

Brooke Shields' daughter says she learned about her mother's sexual assault from her doctor

Brooke Shields' younger daughter said she learned about her mother's alleged sexual assault when she saw the revealing documentary “Pretty Baby” last year.

Grier Henchy, the second daughter of the model and actor and her husband Chris Henchy, told People that she “didn't make it through” the documentary after seeing her mother emotionally describe the experiences on camera.

“I was learning things at the same time as the world and just perceiving them more intensely and personally,” Grier said.

In the documentary, Shields talks about her experiences with sexualization at a young age, after her breakthrough role as a child prostitute at the age of eleven.

The documentary uses a mix of archival footage and interviews with Shields, who publicly stated for the first time that she was sexually harassed by an unnamed male Hollywood executive in her early 20s.

While Shields' other daughter, 21-year-old Rowan, knew about the sexual assault before the documentary was released, 18-year-old Grier was not informed.

“I didn't prepare her,” the 59-year-old told People, adding that it was “a misunderstanding.”

“I had explained to her that it was an exploration of the sexualization of women in my industry, but I naively thought that because we had such solid, healthy, fairly normal lives and I'm not completely damaged, she would say, 'Wow, you've been through a lot, but look where we are today,'” she added.

Shields said she tried to tell Grier there was a “happy ending,” but her daughter replied, “I'll never get over the fact that something bad happened to you.”

“In the end, she missed the happy part,” Shields continued. “She felt helpless, and just like us mothers, we make mistakes and sometimes make assumptions.”

In the documentary, directed by Lana Wilson, Shields said the assault occurred shortly after graduating from Princeton University when she agreed to attend a dinner she thought was a work meeting.

The unnamed attacker then invited her to his hotel room to call a taxi and attacked her when they were alone, she said.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Shields said she didn't know if she would ever be able to speak publicly about the incident.

“I had to go through many years of therapy before I could even talk about it. I definitely worked through it very hard and learned to deal with it,” she said.
