Firefighter at the scene of the accident revealed the tragic last words Princess Diana had said to him

A firefighter who was at the scene of the car crash that killed Princess Diana 27 years ago spoke about hearing her final words.

On this day (August 31) in 1997, a car accident in Paris led to Diana’s death.

It is one of the most famous moments in history: she was in a car that sped away from a hotel while being pursued by paparazzi.

The driver of the car was Henri Paul, the deputy head of security at the Ritz Paris. As it later turned out, he had almost four times the legal alcohol level in his blood.

Also in the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz S 280 sedan, were Diana's partner Dodi Fayed and her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones.

During the pursuit, the car was driven into the Pont de l'Alma tunnel and crashed. Paul and Fayed were pronounced dead at the scene.

Diana's death was later confirmed in hospital, while Rees-Jones survived the accident despite numerous serious injuries.

Since it was a terrible accident, rescue workers rushed to the scene and among them was firefighter Xavier Gourmelon, who heard Princess Diana's last words.

In conversation with Good morning, Great Britain On the 20th anniversary of her death, the firefighter said he was there to hear her last words.

He said: “She looked at me and said, 'Oh my God, what happened?'

“I tried to calm her down and tell her we would take care of her and she fell into a coma again.”

Gourmelon said when they responded to the scene, they initially did not know who was in the car, nor did he realize it was Princess Diana speaking to him.

He said she was initially “agitated” before losing consciousness again.

She was still in the wreckage of the car at the time and when she was taken out of the vehicle she suffered cardiac arrest.

He said: “At that moment, the doctor said she had suffered a cardiac arrest. So we performed CPR and after 20 seconds she regained consciousness and we took her to the ambulance.”

The firefighter said he could not see any injuries on her body and expected she would make a full recovery if she could be taken to the hospital.

However, she died as a result of another cardiac arrest in the hospital from which she could not be resuscitated.

A French investigation into the accident found that Henri Paul was responsible, while a British investigation found that Paul and the paparazzi pursuing him were guilty of manslaughter through negligent negligence.
