A 23-year-old man appeared before Cork District Court and was charged in connection with a series of serious incidents that occurred on the same day in the north of the city earlier this month.

Jamie Russell, of Harbour View Road, Knocknaheeny, Cork City, is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a weapon, possession of ammunition, dangerous driving causing personal injury and driving without insurance or a licence.

He is also accused of theft, unauthorized possession of a vehicle, hit and run and criminal damage. All of the crimes he is accused of occurred on August 23.

Giving evidence for the arrest, charge and caution, Det Garda Mick Dolan told Judge John King that he charged Mr Russell with ten offences at Gurranabraher Garda Station at 10.41pm last night.

He said the defendant made no reply when the charges were presented to him under warning.

Directions from the DPP are awaited in this case. Inspector Dave Noonan said there was no objection to bail in this case. However, no application for bail has been made at this stage.

Attorney Mahon Corkery applied for legal aid on behalf of his client, which was granted as Mr Russell is on social security. Judge King remanded Mr Russell in custody to appear again by videolink at Cork District Court on 6 September.

No further details of the facts of the case have been given at this stage, however Gardai had previously advised that at 5.40pm on 23 August, criminal damage occurred at a property in Shanakiel, Cork city.

Half an hour later, a motorcycle collided with a male pedestrian in his 60s on the Churchfield Road in the city. The pedestrian was later taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A suspected firearm was subsequently confiscated by the Gardaí.
