The five best games on August 31st with Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and more

Both number one seeds will be in action on Day 6 of the 2024 US Open.

The 2024 US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year, has already produced some incredible results. Carlos Alcaraz's second-round loss understandably made headlines. Even more drama and thrilling action is expected on the sixth day of competition, as athletes from around the world hope to secure a place in the round of 16.

The two top seeds Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek as well as the 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev are expected to compete, promising an exciting day of high-class tennis.

So without further delay, let’s take a look at the top five matches on day six of the 2024 US Open:

US Open 2024, Day 6 (August 31), Predictions

5. Jannik Sinner against Christopher O'Connell

Jannik Sinner entered the US Open amid a flood of controversy and had a bit of a problem early in the first round when he lost his first set. But since then, the Italian has shown everyone why he is the top seed by defeating Alex Michelsen in straight sets in the second round.

The number one seed will face Australia's Christopher O'Connell in the third round. Connell made headlines early in the tournament when he eliminated number 29 seed Nicholas Jarry and then Mattia Bellucci in four sets in his first round match.

The Australian's path to the third round was nothing short of sensational, especially considering how close he came to qualifying. Despite his good performances so far, the reigning Australian Open champion is expected to dominate this duel.

Forecast: Jannik Sinner wins in two sets.

4. Jasmine Paolini vs Yulia Putintseva

An interesting women's singles match between two top-class players is coming up. Jasmine Paolini has had a dream year, reaching the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The Italian is eager to end the year with her first Grand Slam title.

On the other hand, Yulia Putintseva has earned the title of “Big Eater” after defeating world number one Iga Swiatek at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and US Open champion Coco Gauff at the Cincinnati Masters. This will be only the second time these two will face each other; their only duel took place in 2021 and was won by Paolini.

Forecast: Yulia Putintseva wins in three sets.

3. Alex de Minaur vs Daniel Evans

Daniel Evans recently came into the spotlight when he defeated Karen Khachanov in a marathon match that lasted more than 5 hours, making it the longest match in US Open history. He will face 10th seed Alex de Minaur, who is playing his first tournament since a heartbreaking withdrawal from the Wimbledon Championships where he was due to face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

However, as fate would have it, the Australian will have the opportunity to face the Serb if he wins his third round. Unlike his British rival, Minaur has had a quiet run and is expected to emerge victorious at the end of this contest.

Forecast: Alex de Minaur wins in four sets.

2. Daniil Medvedev vs Flavio Cobolli

Daniil Medvedev claimed a comfortable straight-sets victory over Hungary's Fabian Marozsan to set up a match against another Hungarian, Flavio Cobolli. After Alcaraz's early exit, Medvedev will be hoping to repeat his 2021 heroics when he won his first and only Grand Slam.

The No. 5 seed has never played the Hungarian in his career. Cobolli pulled off a couple of big upsets earlier this month, beating No. 10 seed Tommy Paul at the Cincinnati Masters and No. 14 seed Felix Auger Aliassime at the Canadian Open. Although the Russian will be skeptical about his rival, he is expected to emerge victorious over the No. 31 seed.

Forecast: Daniil Medvedev wins in four sets.

1. Iga Swiatek vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

Current world number one Iga Swiatek has had a great run at the 2024 US Open so far, destroying her rivals in impressive fashion. Against Ena Shibahara in the second round, Swiatek only dropped three sets in the entire match.

After facing a number of qualifiers in her first two rounds, Swiatek's true test will now come against 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated 2024 Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, the same player Swiatek previously beat in the semifinals. The Polish number one has shown remarkable determination and resilience so far and will need to deliver a dominant performance if she wants to make it to the round of 16.

Forecast: Iga Swiatek wins in three sets.
