Egyptian worker killed in hotel brawl, Israeli tourists injured

The dispute is said to have broken out between the hotel staff and the tourists (representative).

Cairo, Egypt:

An Egyptian worker was killed in a brawl at a hotel in the Egyptian coastal city of Taba on Friday that left three Arab-Israeli tourists and other workers injured, a medical source told AFP.

The worker died of his injuries “in the ambulance that was transporting him from Taba” on the border with Israel to Sharm el-Sheikh, 200 kilometers south, the source said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Three other workers and three “Arab 48” tourists were also injured, reported Egyptian state-run media outlet Al-Qahera News.

The term “Arab 48” refers to the Palestinians and their descendants who remained there after the founding of the State of Israel in 1948.

On Friday, there was an altercation between hotel staff and tourists “who had tried to use the hotel's free services,” the broadcaster reported.

Al-Qahera News, which is linked to state intelligence, reported that security authorities were investigating the incident.

A senior security source denied Israeli media reports that the altercation was a “stabbing”.

The incident occurred in the Egyptian border town of Taba in South Sinai, a popular tourist destination for Israelis.

Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel and has played a key role as a mediator between Israeli and Palestinian politicians for decades, including in the current war in the Gaza Strip.
