  • The capsizing of a replica Viking ship off the coast of Norway claimed one life last Tuesday.
  • The responsible police now assume that it was an accident.
  • A large wave caused the boat with the six adventurers, including four Swiss, to capsize.

Based on interviews with the five survivors, the police concluded that it was a “tragic accident” and that no one could be held responsible. The case was closed.

A team of six adventurers led by Swiss skipper and expedition leader Andy Fitze set sail from the Faroe Islands at the weekend to sail and row to Norway on the replica Viking boat “Naddoddur”.

The open, motorless boat capsized off the western Norwegian coast in stormy seas with waves up to five meters high. A young woman from the team lost her life. The five other crew members were rescued by emergency services.

According to the police, the survivors reported rapidly changing weather conditions at sea.
