Two men and a woman were killed when a car collided with pedestrians in a popular seaside resort.

The accident involving an Audi occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Alma Street near Beaumaris Pier on Anglesey.

North Wales Police said that “despite the best efforts of all involved”, a woman and a man, as well as a male driver, were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the driver was in his 80s and was from North Wales, while the pedestrians were both in their 60s and from outside the area

Police said that despite the efforts of all involved, all three people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Rhys Morgan Eckley was working near the pier in Beaumaris when he heard the screeching of tyres and “the loud bang”.

He said he “at first just thought it was a stupid driver,” but as he approached the scene of the accident, he saw three bodies.

“I think it has shaken Beaumaris and the island as well. It is such a tragic event and many people have experienced it.”

Ifan Huw Jones, who works in Beaumaris, said the car “immediately caught his eye”.

“There was a squealing and spinning of tires and there was smoke in the air,” he said.

“The car just started heading towards the building at the end of the street and turned right. I didn't see any brake lights and then it headed straight towards the house.

Ynys Môn MP Llinos Medi said news of the crash had “shaken the island of Anglesey”.

“Individuals have seen things that will take some time to process,” she said.

Ms Medi said Beaumaris was a town “that sees hordes of tourists during the summer holidays”.

David Evans, the mayor of Beaumaris, said the town was “extremely busy” during the summer and Wednesday was no different.

“This is a small but close-knit community. This is heartbreaking news for all of us.”

He said he had “never seen so many emergency vehicles in Beaumaris”.

A witness told the PA news agency she saw “a car hit a pedestrian and then a house”.

“It was just horrible. The ambulance took forever to get here and when the police and vehicles finally arrived … there was nothing they could do once they got here,” she said.

“Everyone really pulled together, redirected traffic and did their best to give people their dignity, but it was pretty horrific.”

A witness said that in the collision, a car first hit a pedestrian and then hit a house.

Another witness described the scene on Alma Street minutes after the incident that left three people dead.

Gareth Williams, who lives in Beaumaris and was working on the pier at the time of the accident, said: “Someone called me and said something had happened.”

“When I arrived, I saw two bodies with people performing CPR on them. I must have arrived about five minutes after the accident.

“One of the patients was on the floor and the other was around the corner. Three people were performing CPR and taking turns trying to help.”

Mr Williams said he was unable to see into the car involved because the airbags blocked his view.

“There was oil and water everywhere on the street,” he said.

“About five minutes after I arrived, the ambulance arrived and then the police were on the scene.”

He added: “The paramedics did their best to save the people for about 20 minutes.”

Reverend Lesley Rendle told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast about an “overwhelming feeling of sadness throughout the city”.

“People were checking on their neighbors and making sure their friends were OK,” he said.

Police said officers, firefighters, rescue crews and helicopters were at the scene.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene of the accident shortly before 2.45pm (BST) on Wednesday.

All police cordons have now been removed from the crime scene on Alma Street near Beaumaris Pier.

Beaumaris is a popular holiday destination on the east coast of Anglesey. Many tourists visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Beaumaris Castle or nearby Puffin Island.

North Wales Police said they wanted to speak to witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage.
