Serious hit-and-run accident in South Charlotte on August 27, 2024

Charlotte, NC (August 27, 2024) – According to local reporting, a serious hit-and-run accident occurred in the Steele Creek Division of South Charlotte at approximately 10:21 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) arrived on the scene in the parking lot of 7701 Sharon Lakes Road to discover a seriously injured pedestrian, later identified as Luis Alfredo Lopez-Garcia, lying in the middle of the parking lot. Lopez-Garcia was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, resulting in life-threatening injuries.

Emergency medical services immediately transported Lopez-Garcia to Atrium Health Main for treatment. According to the preliminary investigation by CMPD's Major Accident Unit, the suspect, Baudilio Lopez Perez, was driving a white 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck through the parking lot when he struck Lopez-Garcia, who was lying on the sidewalk. Instead of stopping to render aid or contact police, Perez fled the scene, abandoned his vehicle on Waterford Lakes Drive and fled on foot.

The following day, August 28, 2024, Perez was tracked down and arrested by police. He was charged with hit and run and, after being questioned at the Law Enforcement Center, was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
