Eco-militant group claims responsibility for arson attack on egg factory in Thessaloniki

The fire at the factory of the company “TSAKIRIS EGGS SA”, reportedly one of the largest of its kind in northern Greece, broke out shortly after 8 p.m. on August 22.

“They are not entrepreneurs, they are murderers of millions of animals,” said the Animal Liberation Front in a statement published on an anarchist website, claiming responsibility for the arson.

“Every day, thousands of animals die in miserable conditions for the taste of their meat and thereby make enormous profits […] “In a world where the extermination of defenseless (animals) is the norm, we refuse to be part of it. We refuse to passively watch the slaughter and the fight with fire,” the statement said.

The organization further threatened: “If you rebuild it [the factory]we will burn it down again.”

In a statement released a few hours after the fire, the company's CEO, Pavlos Tsakiris, announced that the fire had completely destroyed the facilities that housed the administrative offices, egg packing and logistics infrastructure.

However, he pointed out that the facilities where the animals are housed are not at risk as they are located at different sites.
