Officer Crowley was paralyzed when a drunk driver crashed into his patrol car, injuring him and three other officers. He was 22 years old at the time of the accident.

Crowley was 59 and died Thursday, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation said.

“Jim had a very difficult life in the years following the accident, but was always able to maintain a positive attitude,” said Phil Cline, executive director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Crowley family, especially his only sister, Beth, who cared for him so much over the years.”

Officer Crowley lived in a group home in San Marcos, Texas, where he received special care.
