Russian troops transported to the contested city of Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast were forced to withdraw after suffering losses, Ukraine said on August 29.

In a Telegram post, the Kharkiv troop group said Russian soldiers were on the move in two tanks and two other armored vehicles “as part of preparations for offensive operations.”

No information was given on how many Russian soldiers were killed in the battle.

Vovchansk is a contested city about 60 kilometers northeast of Kharkiv that has seen heavy fighting since Russia launched a new offensive in the region in May.

The Kharkiv Group of Forces reported on August 20 that Russia had increased aerial reconnaissance and was preparing new offensive operations.

The Russian offensive in northern Kharkiv Oblast initially gained ground in May, but quickly stalled. Russian troops reportedly suffered heavy losses.

Compared to other sectors, the intensity of the fighting has decreased somewhat, but since then there have been several reports that Russia is preparing new attacks.

Some observers believe the offensive contributed to the expansion of Ukrainian forces as Russia intensified its advance in Donetsk Oblast, focusing on cities such as Pokrovsk, Toretsk and Khasiv Yar.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia controls 40 percent of Chasiv Yar

If Chasiv Yar is fully captured, Russian forces could use the high altitude to gain a greater advantage for attacks on the neighboring towns of Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka, as well as the nearby larger city of Kramatorsk, said Andrii Polukhin, a spokesman for Ukraine's 24th Mechanized Brigade.
