Man arrested for fatally shooting soldier at Fort Liberty outside hookah lounge

A Fayetteville man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with the fatal shooting of a Fort Liberty soldier in May outside a Ramsey Street hookah lounge.

Jaivion Omari Robinson, 22, is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the May 4 killing of 21-year-old Jonah Malik Taylor.

According to search warrants, Taylor died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after being transported there in a private vehicle.

According to court records, the first 911 call came to police around 2:30 a.m. The caller said he was in a parking lot near the Anubis Hookah Lounge on Ramsey Street when he heard the gunshots and saw several vehicles speeding out of the area, court records say.

The caller said the shooter left the scene in a gray vehicle, was wearing a green hat and white overalls and was armed with a large silver handgun, the warrant said.

Two .45 caliber cartridge cases, drops of blood, a gold necklace and a Don Julio liquor bottle were found at the crime scene, the arrest warrant states.

Through tips from Crimestoppers, police learned the names of Robinson and the people he was with the night of the shooting, according to court documents.

Five days after the murder, Robinson, who was driving a gray Nissan Altima, was stopped by police for allegedly violating window tinting, records state. According to a search warrant, police say the Nissan is the same vehicle that sped away from the crime scene.

At his first appearance on Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Cheri Siler-Mack denied Robinson bail on the grounds that he had other charges pending against him and that he had a history of frequent failures to appear in court.

The 20 unrelated charges pending in Cumberland County include evading arrest, possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver and two counts of home invasion. According to court records, Robinson was free on bail at the time of Taylor's murder. He was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and disobeying a red light in October.

During Robinson's brief initial court appearance Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney Autumn Young said Taylor and four friends were in a vehicle Taylor was driving when they encountered Robinson and his friends in the parking lot. She said Robinson ripped a chain from someone in Taylor's group and pointed a gun at the occupants of his vehicle before shooting Taylor at point-blank range.

Young also stated that Taylor was unarmed and allegedly told his attacker this.

According to news partner WRAL, Taylor was a paratrooper with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
