One passenger is killed and 38 others injured in a bus accident in Istanbul

ISTANBUL

In a collision between two metro buses in Istanbul on August 29, one passenger was killed and 38 others were injured, two of whom are in critical condition.

A metrobus got out of control and collided with an oncoming metrobus in the Küçükçekmece district at 8:48 a.m.

The force of the impact caused the metrobus to crash into the barriers and two people were trapped underneath.

The accident caused windows to break and significant damage to the front and interior of the metro buses.

Küçükçekmece Mayor Kemal Çebi confirmed that one person had died after rescue workers took him to hospital, without revealing the victim's identity, and noted that the injured were being treated in local hospitals.

The Istanbul Governor's Office said the rear of the metrobus may have veered off the track due to excessive speed, but the exact cause has yet to be determined.

Two drivers and a supervisor were arrested in connection with the incident.

Local media reports said the driver should have turned onto the main road but continued in the bus lane.

Noticing a construction vehicle at the last moment, the driver attempted to brake hard, but this was not enough. As a result, he veered to the right and collided head-on with another metrobus that was coming towards him.

Meanwhile, uninjured passengers attempted to reach nearby stations on foot as the Metrobus lane was closed to traffic. After the vehicles were removed from the scene with the help of tow trucks, service resumed in both directions shortly after.
