Unknown drone shot down over Iraq's Kirkuk, police said

BAGHDAD, Aug 29 (Reuters) – Iraqi air defenses shot down an unmanned drone in the northern city of Kirkuk on Thursday, two police sources told Reuters, launching an investigation into the identity of the drone.

An Iraqi military colonel, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an initial examination of the debris had shown that it was an armed drone belonging to the Turkish military.

The drone crashed in the center of Kirkuk and started a fire near some houses, police sources said. However, there were no injuries. The fire brigade has brought the fire under control.

There was no immediate response from Turkish authorities to a request for comment.
