INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Fever has proven that the best way to stand up to a bully is to remain calm and counter the energy of your tormentor.

Against the Connecticut Sun – a team the Fever struggled against so badly in an early June loss that coach Christy Sides benched four of five regulars early in the fourth quarter – Indiana took its biggest hit, coming off an 84-80 victory on Wednesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Suns tried to set the tone early in a physical game that often devolved into tussles. Forward Nylssa Smith had to leave the game early in the first quarter after taking a hit to the face. Rookie Caitlin Clark found herself flat on the court after taking several tough blocks. Almost every loose ball resulted in a scramble for possession and a jump ball.

Before the anger could boil over, Sides called a timeout to ensure her team remained calm, but experienced Kelsey Mitchell did not let her teammates down.

“I told our group early on that I don't care what happens in the game, that getting bullied isn't the issue — we're not going to get bullied today,” Mitchell said. “For us, it was about making sure we stay confident. … Don't let nothing just happen to you. We know how great these teams are, but we also have confidence in ourselves.”

Knocking out the No. 2 team in the W, which has already secured a playoff spot, could be a huge boost for the up-and-coming Fever. At 15-16, currently seventh in the league table, the Fever are not shying away from thinking about the playoffs. The Fever only have two players – Damiris Dantas and Temi Fagbenle – with playoff experience, but the atmosphere at Gainbridge and the intensity on the court felt like a playoff game for the home team.

Clark said Wednesday's game was one of the most physical games she has ever been involved in. Sides added that her team's ability to take tough hits and keep fighting has shown tremendous improvement since the start of the season.

“Today they showed maturity and toughness,” Sides said. “(The Sun are) the best defensive team in the league and they're going to make everything really difficult and play very physical and you can't let that get you down.”

“I felt like the game was getting really rough for a while. I called a timeout just to make sure we kept our composure. We couldn't let that upset us. We just had to keep going like we were doing.”

Toughness can't be measured in numbers, but Fagbenle's willingness to do the dirty work was crucial for the Fever. The veteran didn't score a point, but her 18 +/- were the best on the team. Her length influenced the Suns' attacks on the basket, and her willingness to set blocks gave her teammates space on the perimeter. She finished with three rebounds and a blocked shot. Lexie Hull led Indiana with eight rebounds. Aliyah Boston and Smith each had six rebounds.

“If you want to ask what won this game – the defensive rebounds. I couldn't have said that earlier,” Sides said. “We did a heck of a job. We had to make five stops in the last two minutes and 50 seconds to put the game away. They didn't score a point. That's unbelievable.”

“This is a great team. Just the way they focused and played with pride on this part of the field makes the difference for us.”
