Cowboys player CeeDee Lamb is scared by his agent before he learns of his new contract

Cowboys player CeeDee Lamb is scared by his agent before he learns of his new contract

The Dallas Cowboys finally no longer have to worry about their superstar wide receiver. CeeDee Lamb signed a four-year, $136 million contract ($100 million of which is guaranteed) on Tuesday, making him the second-highest-paid non-quarterback of all time.

However, lamb was trolled by his agent Tory Dandy after signing his contract, via Jane Slater of NFL Network.

“I was actually in Florida chatting with my guys,” Lamb said. “Then I just got a random call, obviously from my agent, and I was expecting that. But at that moment he made a little joke, he took it the other way, and I was a little upset. He was like, 'Everything went down the drain.' I said, 'What do you mean?' And he was like, 'Yeah, they're just trying to give you $34.' [million] a year, and I think to myself, 'Okay… I appreciate that.'”

The $34 million was, of course, the average annual salary Lamb and Dandy were targeting throughout his time off. Now the All-Pro wide receiver can focus on preparing for the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

“It's unbelievable, a great welcome home,” Lamb said of his return to practice. “It was worth the wait and I'm glad to be back here with my guys, getting the timing right and being ready to beat Cleveland. It was a very fulfilling moment, blessed is an understatement. I'm ready to go now.”

Although Lamb and his team ultimately got what they wanted, the path to get there was not easy.

Lamb admitted that he considered giving in and settling for the $18 million salary during the final year of his rookie contract, but Dandy kept him focused on his mission.

“Absolutely, but then my agent came along,” Lamb said. “That's why he's the best at what he does. Kudos to Tory for keeping me under control mentally. He checks in on me maybe three times a week. He just sees how I'm doing mentally and physically and how I'm holding up.”

Lamb held out for several months, training privately in Florida, away from the team. The 25-year-old was facing fines for missing training camp and also struggled with the emotional toll of being away from his teammates.

While Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was stubborn throughout the process, had a positive conversation with Lamb on Tuesday, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“You're going to be handling huge amounts of money. Be careful. Be cautious. Look behind the scenes,” Jones told Lamb. “Think hard when you make decisions about what you have and how you keep it. You don't have to be smart to make money. You can be very talented. You can be very ambitious. You don't have to be smart to make money. But you have to be really smart to keep it. Very smart. If I can help a player in any way keep it, make me a coach.”
