CHICAGO (CBS) – During a robbery at a South Side gas station on Wednesday, the victim fatally stabbed one of the attackers.

The 36-year-old male victim was inside the gas station in the 7600 block of South Halsted Street around 11:14 a.m. when a 38-year-old man and a 20-year-old man pulled his hair and demanded his personal belongings, Chicago police said.

The victim then pulled out a knife and stabbed the 38-year-old man. The 20-year-old perpetrator had a firearm with him and hit the victim in the face.

Both perpetrators fled the gas station and were arrested by police. The victim suffered blunt force trauma to the face and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

The 38-year-old perpetrator was stabbed in the neck and was also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.

No further injuries were reported.

Officers found a weapon at the crime scene. Detectives from the surrounding area are investigating the incident.

Chicago police data show that the number of assaults, which include shootings and stabbings, has increased slightly from 549 to 593 so far this year compared to the same period last year. This represents an increase of about 8%.
