3-year-old twin girls drown in apartment complex pool, police say

SHERMAN, Texas (KXII/Gray News) – Three-year-old twin girls drowned in the swimming pool of a Texas apartment complex on Wednesday.

Just an hour after Sherman police and emergency services were called to the scene, investigators were searching for witnesses.

A local resident and eyewitness, Carrie Curry, described the sequence of events of the tragedy.

“This is a sad moment,” Curry said. “This is so sad and a moment where we need to pray. We need to pray for our children. We really do. Take care of your babies.”

The twins were found unconscious in the swimming pool at the Ridgeview Apartments on West Washington Street, where they lived with their parents.

As the situation unfolded before Curry's eyes, she witnessed the complex's staff acting with a sense of urgency.

“I was leaving my apartment and saw the commotion with the ambulance, the fire trucks and everything,” Curry said. “So I walked behind the police car and saw everyone at the pool. When I looked over, the janitor was standing there. He was soaking wet.”

Sherman Police Department Administrative Lieutenant Kevin Garbacik said efforts were underway to rescue the children.

“Two small children somehow managed to get into the pool,” Garbacik said. “The maintenance workers found them in the pool. They were already underwater. The maintenance workers were able to pull them out and begin recovery operations.”

Unfortunately they came too late.

“The two children have since died. They didn’t make it,” Garbacik added.

Unsupervised children can find themselves in a dangerous situation in no time. Investigators are currently unclear about where the parents were at the time of the drowning.

Garbacik says children can move very quickly.

Curry asks everyone to take care of their children by keeping a close eye on them at all times.

“Parents, if you have children and you keep an eye on your children, always know where they are, whether they're in the house or outside,” Curry said. “Take care of your babies. They are our future.”

No names have been released and Sherman police say their Criminal Investigation Division will continue to investigate the incidents.
