Stabbing in Waukesha, street fight near Barstow and bank; man charged

A Waukesha man is accused of stabbing one man and beating another during a fight Monday night.

Prosecutors filed charges against 47-year-old Adam Malinski. Police said the case was part of a recent increase in violence among homeless people in the city – and it was not the first time Malinski had been involved in the case.

On August 26, officers were called to the Barstow and Bank area around 8:30 p.m. According to a criminal complaint, a fight between homeless people on the street occurred before the stabbing.

One of the victims was found with a stab wound to the chest in a gazebo behind the Lee Sherman Dreyfus State Office Building and taken to a hospital. Prosecutors said the victim told police a man named “Adam” tried to start a fight and the two got into an argument before he was stabbed.

The complaint states that a second victim involved in the fight that night told police that the events stemmed from an incident that occurred on Aug. 23. The victim said he was at the Hope Center and Malinski “punched” him, requiring stitches for his injuries.

The second victim was near the gazebo when Malinski began hitting him on Aug. 26, the indictment says. The victim fought back but said Malinski pulled out a knife. Then the stabbed victim stood up and joined the fight.

According to the complaint, police said there had been a “recent increase” in violence among the homeless, and one person – Adam Malinski – had been involved in “significant” fights. In one incident, Malinski was accused of pulling a knife.

After the stabbing, Malinski was found running through Cutler Park with blood on his neck. As officers approached, he “verbally provoked the situation,” the complaint states, and told officers he had a knife in his pocket. There were small blood spots on the blade.

Malinski denied being involved in a fight, according to the charges, and said the blood on his body was from falling on glass. He also said his name was Adam, but denied he was Adam Malinski.

Overall, Malinski is accused of:

  • Reckless endangerment of safety in the first degree
  • Powerful battery
  • Bodily harm
  • Offense: concealed carrying of a knife
  • Disorderly conduct

Malinski made his first court appearance on August 28. His bail was set at $30,000.
