Traffic accident between car and fire truck leads to closure of Cloverfield Boulevard on Wednesday morning

A Santa Monica Fire Department (SMFD) fire truck was involved in a traffic accident near the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and Cloverfield Blvd. at around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Very little is known at this time, but SMFD says a total of four vehicles were involved, including a KME Tractor Drawn Aerial fire truck. Two people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The KME Tractor Drawn Aerial weighs nearly 40 tons and is often referred to as the “Quint” because it has five main functions: a pump, water tank, aerial ladder, ground ladders and a fire hose. (The name “Quint” is derived from the Latin prefix “quinque-,” meaning five.)

It's clearly recognizable because it also has rear-wheel drive. And although it's much longer than a traditional fire truck, its unique design allows it to navigate around obstacles and maneuver easily into tight and confined spaces, making it ideal for suburban communities with dead-end streets and busy urban areas.
