'I was scared': Brevard County senior survives Hurricane Debby, which overturned his RV with him inside

A senior citizen is still homeless after his RV was destroyed during one of the outer rain bands of Hurricane Debby that hit the Space Coast.

Brevard County did not expect the direct impact of the hurricane in early August, but some residents of a mobile home park in Cocoa still lost everything and are struggling to rebuild nearly three weeks later.

“Here it comes,” said Bryant Culpepper, who will never forget the day his life was literally turned upside down.

Bryant says he was just relaxing that evening when he heard the storm slowly approaching his RV around 6:30 p.m.

“It's pretty amazing that I survived that because everything in the RV, including the refrigerator, was being thrown around like it was a toy and I was right in the middle of it,” said the storm survivor.

The 70-year-old veteran was in his mobile home in Cocoa when his house was blown up by strong storms and high winds from Hurricane Debby.

“The wind lifted the RV up, turned it around and then threw it on the ground,” said Bryant, who was the only person taken to the hospital during the storm. “Everything in the RV was going haywire, and it was pretty scary.”

Bryant was taken to the emergency room. He survived the storm, but that was just the beginning of his problems.

“We told him we would do everything we could to help him and he would not be left on the streets,” said Anna Dahl, who had no idea who Bryant was until a few weeks ago.

Bryant was on the street after being released from the hospital with multiple spinal fractures.

He had nowhere to go until two strangers came to his aid.

“We need to come together. We need to stay together and we need to start helping each other,” Tyler Dahl said.

Together, Anna and Tyler run a nonprofit in Brevard called Our Friends and Neighbors to help people in need. The couple knew they had to step in to help the senior who had lost everything.

“We're taking it step by step,” said Anna, who immediately tried to raise awareness of Bryant's situation on Facebook and raise funds to help him get back on his feet.

The steps she took sparked an outpouring of support and donations that helped Bryant rebuild.

“Everything I owned was ruined,” said the senior.

FOX 35's Esther Bower met the trio and asked Bryant if he had ever seen so many people come together to help before.

“No, no,” he replied. “What these two did is just incredible. It's like a savior. Someone came and helped.”

The total strangers did everything they could to help the senior whose situation could happen to anyone. Bryant had a home until he didn't.

“It can happen to anyone,” Tyler said. “Any of us could be affected.”

Now he has new friends for the rest of his life. Bryant is still recovering in a care facility and hopes to move out and find a new place to live soon.
