Pedestrian killed in early morning accident

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The following is a press release from the Louisiana State Police.

This morning, shortly after 4:00 a.m., officers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a one-car crash involving a pedestrian on LA 23, north of Seatrain Road in Plaquemines Parish. The crash resulted in the death of 19-year-old Kyrin Dotson of Baton Rouge.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 Toyota Tundra was traveling northbound in the left lane on LA 23. At the same time, Dotson was traveling east, crossing the northbound lanes on LA 23 and running directly into moving traffic. As a result, the Toyota struck Dotson in the left lane of the roadway.

Dotson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was secured and uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were taken from the pedestrian and the driver of the Toyota for analysis. This accident remains under investigation.

Pedestrians and drivers are urged to remain alert on the road and keep a close eye on their surroundings. Pedestrian accidents can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear bright or reflective clothing and avoid walking on the road in dark areas. Pedestrians should assume they will not be seen by oncoming motorists, especially at night. Pedestrians should only cross roads in well-lit, designated areas and always walk in the direction of travel. These simple steps can increase pedestrian safety.
