Driver drank alcohol before crash that killed cyclist in Gilbert, police said

GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) – A Queen Creek man was arrested several months after a cyclist was killed in a crash in Gilbert.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Adam Vesely was riding near Queen Creek and Higley roads on March 2 when he veered into the bike lane. Authorities said Vesely struck a 66-year-old bicyclist while traveling 45 mph.

The unidentified victim was thrown 26 meters into a nearby park. Passers-by and rescue workers tried to save the man, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

After the accident, Vesely stopped and remained at the scene with investigators. Court documents said he showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking alcohol.

Vesely was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with involuntary manslaughter.(Maricopa County Sheriff's Office)

According to court documents, lab tests confirmed that Vesely drank alcohol while taking the prescription drug citalopram, an antidepressant. Investigators said the drug comes with a warning that one should not drink alcohol while taking it because it can increase drowsiness or impair alertness and concentration. His blood alcohol content (BAC) was not disclosed in the documents.

Vesely was taken into custody Tuesday and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on a manslaughter charge, where he is being held on $25,000 bail.
