APD holds press conference on 7th police-involved shooting in 2024

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage police on Wednesday released the latest details on a shooting that occurred Friday, the seventh officer-involved shooting in the city since May.

On Friday, police shot and wounded a murder suspect, whose name has not yet been released, in an industrial area northeast of the city center. Three reports had identified him as an armed cyclist who had shot another man the day before.

Police identified the other man as 48-year-old Carl Washington.

The incident began around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, when the suspect fired at least one shot outside a storage facility near East Fifth Avenue and Karluk Street, according to police. Officers found Washington with injuries to his upper body, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

After receiving tips the next day, APD Chief Sean Case said officers saw the suspect while speaking with complainants inside a store and that officers went back outside to follow him. When officers caught up to him, Case said, he was told to drop his weapon.

Case said he turned around after a “considerable period of time” and fired at least one shot at the officers, after which Officer Ryan Kelley fired several shots.

After falling to the ground and getting back up, the man reportedly shot at officers several more times. He was then shot again and injured.

He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, the APD said. The officers were not injured.

The APD said Monday that Officer Kelley has been on the force for six years.
