Russia calls for “more objectivity” from IAEA after nuclear power plant visit

Russia on Wednesday expressed its desire for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a “more objective and clear” stance on nuclear safety, as Moscow put it.

A day earlier, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi visited the Russian Kursk nuclear power plant and warned of a serious nuclear threat. The plant had been damaged by a drone attack, he said, but did not clarify who was responsible.

“Pointing fingers is something that I, as Director General of the IAEA, have to take extremely seriously. But it is obvious that what we have seen here cannot be separated from the recent military activity that we have observed,” he said.

According to Grossi, the building did not have a safety dome that would have provided some protection in the event of an impact.

The IAEA called on both Moscow and Kiev to keep hostilities away from nuclear facilities because of the risk of a catastrophe.

The Russian authorities have blamed Ukraine for the attack. There has been no reaction from Ukraine to this accusation so far.

“We see both the assessments and the work of this structure (the IAEA), but each time we would like a more objective and clear presentation of the position of this structure,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a radio interview with Russian state news agency RIA.

“Not in favor of our country, not in favor of confirming Moscow’s position, but in favor of facts with a certain
The aim is to ensure security and prevent the development of a catastrophic scenario to which the Kyiv regime is pushing everyone,” she added.

On August 6, Ukrainian troops attacked near the Kursk region, about 40 kilometers from the power plant. Russia is still trying to repel the attack.
