Last teenager involved in January attack in downtown Cincinnati sentenced

CINCINNATI – The last teenager involved in a robbery in downtown Cincinnati in January was sentenced Wednesday.

The teen, whom WCPO is not naming because he is a minor, was sentenced to probation for his role in the attack on a man on Jan. 23. The teen will also move to Detroit to live with his grandmother and will be ordered to stay in school and therapy. The victim will also be paid restitution.

The robbery occurred on Tuesday, January 23rd, around 8 p.m. near the intersection of Walnut Street and E Sixth Street. The robbery was captured by two different surveillance cameras.

In the videos provided to WCPO 9, a person walking down the street is attacked from behind by a group of people. The group kicks him to the ground and steals some of his belongings before running away. Despite being repeatedly punched and kicked, the victim suffered only minor injuries, according to a police report.

After footage of the attack was released, Cincinnati Police Lieutenant Jonathan Cunningham called it “disturbing to watch.”

“It is not OK to do to the victim what this group of individuals did to the victim,” Cunningham said.

In July, 18-year-old Jadin Shaw and the other youths involved in the attack were convicted. Shaw was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in the attack.

In addition to Shaw, four young people were also convicted in July:

  • A 14-year-old was sentenced to a suspended sentence
  • A 15-year-old was sentenced to pay the victim $800 in damages
  • A 13-year-old pleaded guilty to robbery related to the crime, but the juvenile court did not impose a sentence
  • A 14-year-old accused of the January 23 attack and a second attack on January 24 was sentenced to probation

In court in July, officials said Shaw and the group of teenagers came from a nearby Chipotle, where another disturbance had been reported, before attacking the man.
