Dolores Mountain Quilters' Guild sees big turnout at fall show – The Journal

Darcie Marquez' quilt was awarded Best in Show, among other things

The Dolores Mountain Quilters' Guild announced the winners of its biennial quilt show, held Aug. 16 and 17, on Tuesday. The award for best quilt show went to Darcie Marquez. Additional winners were announced in several categories.

In total, 3,000 raffle tickets were sold and 115 quilts were on display during the two-day show. According to Judith Swain, a member of the Dolores Mountain Quilters, nearly 700 people were in attendance.

The event also involved more than 70 volunteers who worked at least 950 hours to help make the show possible, Swain said.

“It was wonderful to hear the comments from visitors and see the audience immersed in the show. Locals and visitors appreciated the artistry of the quilts, the vendors and our handmade boutique items,” said Lou Ann Jacobson Ball, chair of the Quilt Show Committee.

During the event, about $5,000 was raised, which will be distributed to local nonprofits. Even local businesses and their customers were able to enjoy the quilt show.

Linnea Peterson, owner of Dolores Food Market, said, “It was wonderful to hear our customers rave about the quilt show. What a great event for our community.”

Raffle tickets were purchased for a chance to win one of the Guild's quilts, and Mason Zigler was declared the winner among thousands of entrants.

Other quilts named winners at the show included: Linda Jahrus (large bed quilt), Marquez (medium bed quilt), Jan Shepherd (small bed quilt), Ila Starks (child's quilt), Heather Musclow (throw/lap quilt), Judy Bryan (large wall quilt), Cathy Duggan (medium wall quilt), and Jacobson Ball (small/minimal wall quilt).

Other winners included Ruth Ann Thompson (art quilt), Olive Gray (youth quilt) and Suzanne Butterfield (other).

LouAnn Burkett, one of the show's attendees and quilt maker, expressed her view of the event as follows: “The quilt show was the most beautiful place in Montezuma County last weekend.”
