Shooting involving a police officer in Kent ends with suspect committing suicide

Detectives with the Kent Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kent. The shooting occurred around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex located at 102 Madison Avenue N.

“Officers responded to a 911 call reporting six to seven gunshots,” KPD said in an official press release. “Officers arrived in the area and had just exited their patrol cars when they heard additional shots, believed to have been fired at them.”

At that point, an officer returned fire on the suspect, who was on the upper floor of the apartment building. Officers cleared the building and arrested someone who said his brother was the suspected shooter. The person arrested also told authorities that the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an upstairs apartment.

Officers secured the unit and rendered aid until paramedics arrived to perform life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the 34-year-old man succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.

No officers were injured in the shooting. The Valley Independent Investigative Team is currently leading the investigation.
