RHOC's Vicki Gunvalson Opens Up About 'Fatal' Health Scare – All About the Real Housewives

RHOC star Vicki Gunvalson describes a “fatal” health scare she suffered and reveals she only had a “10 to 20 percent” chance of survival.

The OG of the OC speaks about a serious health risk.

In the August 26 episode of Vicki Gunvalson’s My friend, my soulmate, my podcastThe Real Housewives of Orange County OG described in detail a recent health crisis she experienced that resulted in amnesia.

Her friend, Micheal Smith, accompanied her and filled in some gaps in her story.

“Many hours of my life are missing because I have a kind of amnesia.” she explained.

Vicki Gunvalson explains that earlier this month she remembered going to the hairdresser “as usual.”

“I was gone for probably an hour or two and I don't know where I was. So I came into the office… a client came in and she said I was talking gibberish and I wrote an email that didn't make any sense.” she said.

The customer in question was a “Retired emergency doctor” who noticed that something was wrong with the RHOC star.

“He stood up and said [Michael’s daughter] Olivia that I might have a stroke, we didn’t know,” she continued. “I don’t remember anything and [Olivia] took me to the hospital.”

According to Vicki, she doesn’t “remember many things” of what happened next, but was released from the hospital because he was wrongly diagnosed with sinusitis.

Vicki Gunvalson's boyfriend explained that her sinus infection had worsened the week before “different” than usual.

“It took a little longer and she really wasn’t feeling well,” he said, noting that she was taking antibiotics and “things got better” before you set off on a trip to Europe.

“On the whole, everything was fine,” Smith further explained that he was in Arizona when Vicki's medical incident occurred and his daughter called him and asked him to come home.

“She was lethargic and had no idea where she was,” he said.

When Smith came home, he found Vicki taking a bath.

“I come in and she is pretty unconscious,“, he recalled and called it “one of the scariest” Moments of the whole ordeal.

“I grabbed her, pulled her out of the water and put her in bed. The doctor said she just needed to sleep, so I put her in bed and she literally slept for 13, 14 hours straight.”

When Vicki Gunvalson woke up, she was disoriented, which worried Smith. He thought she might have had a stroke and took her to the hospital.

“She had a serious infection,” said Smith. “It was actually sepsis, but it was pneumonia. And what happened – and I'm not a doctor, but when they explained it – is that when your body is fighting an infection that big and that dangerous, your whole body attacks it, which affects the brain and everything else in your body because your body sends everything it has to fight it.”

“It was dangerous,” he said. “I mean, I just try not to get into it, but it was scary.”

“I don’t remember much, and that’s the trauma of the brain,” said the RHOC star. “It's very similar to a stroke or post-traumatic stress disorder, where the brain just goes into a rest mode. … There was just a litany of things that could have happened and gone wrong, but they didn't.”

“I wanted to make sure I understood everything correctly. … I asked: ‘Did I hear correctly that I have a 10 to 20 percent [chance of] Survive?'” she said. “And the lady on the phone – she called me every day – said, 'Yes, the sepsis that entered your body is fatal and you survived it.'”

Vicki further admitted that the trauma caused by her health scares had taken a big toll on her.

“I cry a lot. And Michael always says, 'Why are you always crying?' I have no answer.” she said. “A week ago we were in Barcelona and walked 16 [to] 20,000 steps and we had the time of our lives. And three days later, [I’m in the hospital].”

“She will be fine,” Smith said about Vicki. “She's coming out of there.”
