UNC Campus Shooting | One year since Professor Dr. Zijie Yan was shot at Caudill Labs

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – It has been one year since the shooting that killed a professor on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, and today the bell tower will ring in memory of Dr. Zijie Yan and his legacy.

On this day one year ago, shots were fired at Caudill Laboratories and police cordoned off the university in search of the shooter.

Before arresting graduate student Tailei Qi and charging him with the crime, the other students on campus remained in place.

Among them was Jeremy Fine, who is doing his doctorate in Carolina.

He told me he didn't think UNC could have provided better information that day.

“But at the same time, we were sitting in the dark, both literally and figuratively, when the automatic lights went out. And we wanted to know if everything was going to be OK or not. I just texted my parents and didn't want them to worry too much because I thought everything was going to be OK. But I also wanted them to be informed. So it was a challenge to figure out how much to share with my loved ones so they didn't feel the terror that I was going through,” Jeremy Fine said.

Advice is available here today for anyone who needs it.

And the university says the bell tower will ring at 1:15 p.m. today in memory of Dr. Yan.
